红玛瑙：红色的玛瑙，即古代的赤玉。红玛瑙是各色玛瑙中的上品，故在《格古要论》中有“玛瑙无红一世穷”之说。
黑玛瑙：黑色的玛瑙。自然界少见黑玛瑙，目前中国珠宝市场上的黑玛瑙都是人工着色而成，其色浓黑，易与其它黑色玉石相混。以其硬度大于黑耀石等区别。
